Butterfly lands in Europe's largest square
Just 16+16 elements of the Outline Butterfly Vertical Line Array were sufficient as a sound reinforcement system in Europe's largest square (Padua's Prato della Valle in Italy). The event in question featured a celebration held annually by radio/TV broadcaster Radio Italia Solo Musica Italiana and Video Italia, one of the world's most widely distributed satellite TV stations. The show, which included performances by twenty of Italy's top artists, such as Marco Masini, Biagio Antonacci, Piero Pelu, Omar Pedrini, Ron, I Nomadi, Le Vibrazioni, Adriano Pappalardo, DJ Francesco and many more, was transmitted live across Italy and a good part of the rest of the world.

The square itself covers an area of approximately 90,000 square metres and thanks to the high frequency directivity characteristics of its special patented D.P.R.W.G. (Double Parabolic Reflective Wave Guides), Outline's Butterfly array covered the listening area evenly with high sound pressure levels and great acoustic quality without any loss of intelligibility.

Mario Volanti, President of the broadcast association involved with the event commented: "Initially, we were rather perplexed about the possibility of staging such an important event with a sound system that was so small and light that it passed almost unnoticed. Then, once it was switched on for afternoon rehearsals I'd never have thought that these two columns of enclosures which, to tell the truth, looked like single monobloc-type sculptures, would have been able to give a sound that was so powerful, but at the same time natural and never unpleasant, even at a very high volume. The MC'sā voices were clear even though they were coming from 140 yards away whilst music had the effect of listening to two huge long-throw studio monitors. We were also astonished with the speed and ease with which the crew flew and fine-tuned the system - it didn't take more than 45 minutes from start to finish."

Reproduction of the ultra-low frequencies was entrusted to 8+8 ground-installed Victor Live subwoofers. As well as the Butterfly Hi-pack units (16+16), it was decided to also fly 8+8 Low-Pack units, whose cardioid characteristics were used to reinforce and project the sound in the 40-100Hz frequency range. Six Outline H.A.R.D. 212 SP (self-powered) and four Tripla II enclosures were used respectively for monitor and stage side-fill work. Amplification and control hardware was also by Outline, with T series power amps and Genius 6 processors..
