It's already more than a year since Bed Supperclub first opened its pristine doors. In the fashion of 21st century clubs like Womb in Tokyo, Bed Supperclub (BSC) is replete with highly trained executive staff with equally executive titles to match, ranging from Creative Director to Stylist to Chef De Cuisine. Bed was conceived by Sanya Souvanna Phouma and his partners Paris, an entrepreneur, and Boong, who already had had long experience in club management.
According to Sanya, the creation of Bed was no sudden decision, a lot of time, consideration and planning went into the conception (no doubt a venue in Amsterdam which bears a remarkable similarity to Bed had a lot to do with this).
The venue's PR info explains: "When we came together as partners to found Bed Supperclub, we wanted to provide a forum where people could meet, exchange ideas and feed off each other creatively in an atmosphere of style and innovation".
Once a clear vision for the venue was reached, things came together quickly. Construction was almost exactly nine months.
The tubular void Bed Supperclub structure may look futuristic, but it was an apparent nightmare for prospective sound designers to negotiate and many were reluctant to get involved. In spite of that, with the able supervision of Josh Ezelle, Director of Music & Entertainment / Resident DJ, and together with Singapore sound supplier, Lip Com, by following common sense and basic acoustic principals, they prevailed. According to Josh, Lip's bewildering array of sound analysis gadgetry was put to maximum use.
How was this location selected? Why not some other part of Bangkok? Sukhumvit is the happening night life area of Bangkok and just around the corner from the internationally noted Q Bar. There are a couple of other areas in Bangkok worth consideration but this spot was decided on because it is part of a 'new generation zone', more fashionable, upmarket and just a few hundred metres away from the somewhat bawdier parts of Sukhumvit.
As the name suggests, food is a vital element at Bed so another of the 'Bed Mates' (as the main cohorts are referred to) is international Chef de Cuisine, Dan Ivarie. With a vibrant sound system, de-rigeur Technics turntables, Pioneer CD players, expansive floor space and video projections, Bed hardly fits the common restaurant category. Building and interior design was by Orbit Design Studio. The whole inner area comprises two main rooms, plus upper balcony floors.
Yet another vital individual in Bed's 21st Century team is Stylist, Sommart Channarot, a university graduate and painter who styles for Bed stage events, contributes as a make-up artist and designs outfits for Bed staff.
Just how big is Bed? "The building is 800 square metres with the restaurant taking up 60 percent of the space, the rest is a separate bar area. The dining area accommodates 120 guests while the bar has space for 250.
Despite the conservative government's club crippling early closing laws, Bed have plans to open in Sydney, Australia "sometime around autumn 2005".
