If you happen to be looking round the estate agents of Chelsea with £750,000 to burn, perhaps a description marked 'One bedroom apartment' wouldn't immediately catch your eye. Surely some mistake you might think (even for Chelsea). Perhaps one nought too many (steady on, it's still Chelsea). Well, take a closer look and you'll see that this is no error... for this is no ordinary flat. For a start, it overlooks the Thames. All very well, you might think, but still... three quarters of a mill? Look closer and you'll see that this is one of the most remarkable one bedroom apartments you're likely to see. Well, this little baby is apparently the world's first apartment completely lit by RGB colour changing LEDs. And not only that, it's also fully dimmable with a custom-built control system.

Described as a 'Blueprint for future living', the Vos Pad is the inspiration of Vos Solutions' Marcel Jean Vos, a designer with plenty of experience in living spaces with his work on marine interior design projects. It was while Vos was wandering around last year's 100% Design exhibition that he stumbled upon an LED company called ACDC Lighting. There's no need to further extol the virtues of LEDs in this magazine but needless to say, Vos had for a long time been interested in the energy efficient properties of LED lighting. So when he found the right products for his apartment with ACDC he decided to go for it. The results are stunning. Through his design consultancy, Vos Solutions, Marcel has created the first in a series of interior environments that integrate the latest technologies and products within a design framework."I love the idea of LED lighting being a pure medium. One that doesn't mix so well with incandescent light but produces spectacular results in an energy efficient, low maintenance way," drools Vos.

ACDC have created a range of LED products utilising the Luxeon light source for many varied applications including the Vos Pad. The Minicubeus, designed for interior wall wash applications and used extensively throughout the Vos Pad, is a brushed or polished aluminium cube which can be provided with a fixing kit for solid walls. A unique four-directional wall wash effect can be created with the related Cubeus product. The accompanying use of in-ground LED luminaries with no ceiling lighting at all means a distinct lack of shadow at any time. Yet another innovative idea concerned with the Vos Pad.

As Gareth Frankland of ACDC Lighting states: "Working on the Vos Pad was a privilege and a challenge on what represents a landmark project in LED terms. What is more amazing is that LEDs remain in their early teens in terms of lifetime development, with light outputs not increasing in small steps but large leaps and bounds. The Vos Pad utilises the 1 watt Luxeon LED, and we launch our next range of products based around the 3 Watt at 100% Design this year. Also under development is a 10 watt LED, truly making the Luxeon LED the light source of the 21st century."

You might think that for a living environment this might all be too much for the eye but, as a matter of fact, it can have a very calming influence. Vos is keen on the application of LED lighting in colour therapy and this was borne out by the attendance of some colour therapists at the launch of the Vos Pad. And, if youÕre in the mood for a party, just change the scene! Using Lutron Grafik Integrale controls, the LEDs are dimmed to create an infinite range of colours and hues. The level and colour of the lights in different areas can be changed instantly, to pre-selected scenes or to an infinite number of personally customised configurations. These can be still sets or flow into each other at a programmable rate - from the gently subliminal to fast radical The choice is with the controller like it has never been before. The Lutron Grafik Integrale was the obvious choice for The Vos Pad, combining a sleek, unobtrusive and modern design with great functionality and flexibility.

So what about the future? Will we all be living in LED lit housing in five years time? Well, maybe not but Vos is going to have a good stab at educating as many people as possible about the advantages of LEDs. "I see the Vos Pad as merely a stepping stone to a whole range of LED lit living environments. Our second one will be ready in November which will feature smaller, almost invisible LED sources. There will also be an LED holograph that will blow your mind!"

Vos Solutions are in the process of establishing an innovative group, a think tank if you will, to tackle the application of LEDs in the next five years. The group will consist of people from a diverse range of backgrounds - from manufacturing, retail and development - to push lighting and technology further into the 21st century. And do you know, with his enthusiasm and vision, I think we will all benefit.
