What are the drawbacks of an outstanding building without any shimmering lights along the sides of Hong Kong Victoria Harbor? That would make the building look absolutely inconspicuous and without personality.

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), which is one of the world's largest banking and financial services organisations, has Illuminated their headquarters building exterior with a spectacular amount of Martin luminaries last December. It is part of the Victoria Harbor lighting event planned by the Hong Kong Tourism Board which aims at achieving the objective of 'City of Life' in Hong Kong. The lighting event is the world's first permanent city scale lighting show. Eighteen of Hong Kong's best known buildings are also involved. Called 'A Symphony of Lights' the nightly show commenced this January.

Laservision Limited is the project management company while Simon McCartney is the Director of Design of Laservision. McCartney worked with lighting designer John Rayment on the concept design.

The HSBC building, designed by Sir Norman Foster twenty years ago, is one of the most symbolic buildings located in Hong Kong. Imagine how stunning it is with more than 700 Martin fixtures supplied and installed by Martin Hong Kong. The location of Martin lights was distributed in six sections: Vertical Ladder Trusses; Exoskeleton Elements (Inner) + (Outer); Refuge Floors; North-West Stairwell; Roof - BMU's; and Eastern Facade Stairwells.

    • Vertical Ladder Trusses
Each single vertical ladder truss has 42 Martin Exterior 200's to give a total of 84 fixtures in this area. The Martin Exterior 200 is a conveniently compact and powerful, short throw, CMY colour changer designed for outdoor use. An IP65 rating means the Exterior 200 can withstand the rainy and stormy conditions sometimes found in Hong Kong. A built-in light sensor, memory presets and DMX controllability add to its independent functionality. Useful features also include full-range continuous dimming, manual beam-shaping function, highly efficient optics using long life CDM 150-SA/T and DMX controllable.

    • Exoskeleton Elements (Inner) + (Outer)
For the inner area of the exoskeleton four Martin Exterior 600's with barndoor and snoot (12 degree lens) have been installed in each linear element to give a narrow-angle colour changing effects at the nodes. For the outer area, the same fixture has been used to give a total of 80 Martin Exterior 600's - an advanced model of the Martin Exterior 200.

    • Refuge Floors
Martin Exterior 600's were used again but with 100 degree lenses for wider angle discharge. An anodised aluminum/stainless steel snoot is also used in each fixture for manipulation of light beam. This fixture is used for projecting the roof of each refuge floor.

    • North-West Stairwell
A colour-changing fluorescent and slim designed fixture - Martin Cyclo 03, was installed on each floor (144 in total).

    • The Roof - BMU's
Once again, six Martin Exterior 600's with barndoor (12 degree lens) and twelve Martin Exterior 200 were used for roof decorations.

    • Eastern Facade Stairwells
The greatest Martin luminaries lit area with 336 Martin Cyclo 03 fluorescents being installed.
