No need to ask what this is, then...
No there isn't. BDP has just won a European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Award for the remarkable achievement of restoring and enhancing the Royal Albert Hall whilst still in use.
What was so special about the restoration?
The renovation of the Royal Albert Hall is the first comprehensive overhaul of this unique concert hall since it opened in 1871. To achieve this while the Hall continued to host over 300 events a year, work was divided into 30 discreet projects spread over a period of nine years. the original terraces and the Memorial to the Exhibition of 1851 were reinstated and a new South Porch was built of load-bearing terracotta and brick to match the original construction. Everywhere the historic fabric of the building was renewed.
The South Porch lighting looks special. How was it done?
BDP Lighting arranged Sill projectors (490 series - 15, 48 & 60) around the hall, in a series of rings, the lower ring being mounted to the outer edge of the canopy. Additional fittings are concealed within the gardens flanking the South Steps to illuminate the South Porch where it projects from the main circular form and provides excellent glare control.
It looks perfect for this year's Proms then, eh? Land of Hope and...
Stop it.
Glory. Mother of the Free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
No, really. And put that flag down.
