What is it?
It's Mariko Mori's latest installation, 'Wave UFO'. It's just finished a stint in New York after being introduced at the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria.
OK, so what is it...???
People can enter the fibre glass structure, get hooked up to electrodes which gathers brainwave data. This is transformed into visual imagery, in real time correspondence with the actual activity of the brain, and projected onto a screen.
Sorry I asked! So who is Mariko Mori?
She's a cool artist from Tokyo who specialises in photographic and multimedia works, set in otherworldly landscapes, in which she has starred as a shaman, cyber-chic girl, goddess, and other mythical characters.
What's the lighting link?
The Wave UFO was given a further futuristic effect by the use of lighting. The Xeno and Spirit spotlight systems by Zumtobel Staff underlined the appearance of the installation, not least by their own high-tech looks, at the Kunsthaus Bregenz. They also provided Mariko Mori with recessed downlights (a special solution for the Wave UFO) which were integrated in the skin of the 'spaceship'.
