What is it?
The Metro's 'underground cathedrals' of Copenhagen
What's so special about them?
The inauguration of the underground Metro stations in Copenhagen marked the world premiere of a form of lighting never before used in underground stations. Louis Poulsen Lighting A/S played a central role as co-ordinator and supplier of the lighting.

The new Metro stations are particularly easy to identify because of their characteristic asymmetrical pyramid-shaped skylights, which, along with transparent elevator shafts, are more or less the only parts of the Metro that rise above street level. The stations are twenty metres underground, which allowed the architects to design simple spaces with high ceilings and beautiful accessories, including platforms, stairs and plateaux with ticket machines. The cathedral-like nature of the stations is enhanced by dramatic lighting effects.
What are these lighting effects?
The high level of daylight on the platforms is achieved with the help of a number of flat and parabolic reflectors placed under the skylights, which send daylight 20 metres down. You feel the intensity and colour of a daylight atmosphere and even at the deepest point you still sense slight changes in the weather. In the evening, the lighting level is correspondingly high.
