The Royal Academy - Daylight Control
The practice has been involved with several projects at the Royal Academy which is a client that dpa is delighted to be associated with. The control of daylight has, as previously stated, always been important to dpa so this commission was particularly pleasing. After careful physical modelling studies using the Bartlett Artificial Sky dpa, in association with the in-house architects at the RA, developed a series of blinds and louvres that can be set to allow varying amounts of daylight/sunlight into the spaces. The dynamics of natural light have to be balanced with the particular exhibition in the gallery to produce the optimum lighting arrangement. click thumbnails to enlarge |

'Light' - a temporary installation - part of the Clerkenwell Architectural Biennale
Nick Hoggett and Nathan Savage of dpa lighting consultants conceived and implemented the work which was sponsored by iGuzzini. 'Light' was designed to emphasize the architectural order whilst provoking thought. The use of 192 candles and simple colour sleeved fluorescent battens has achieved order and mystery. |

The Bodleian Library
This was one of the most demanding projects the practice has embarked on. A careful balance had to be struck between book conservation, the architecture and the need for the space to function as an operational library. The solutions carefully integrated lighting components into the building interior without damaging the historic fabric. dpa's work was recognised with an Award of Excellence from the LIF which the whole team rightly takes credit for.

Blackpool Masterplan - South Promenade
The lighting of the south promenade in Blackpool represents an exemplary team effort. The project was taken from the image of a wave to a completed special luminaire and two other lighting components installed in just over a year. The column, specially designed for Blackpool, provides a striking and elegant iconic piece of furniture. The project also utilises solar power with LED fixtures on the sea wall and the "Chameleon Marker" which is a compact fluorescent luminaire with a dichroic glass cover providing dynamism to the passing traffic.
Featured manufacturers: Woodhouse, Urbis and Louis Poulsen and specially designed columns from Reflecto.

The Hilton, Dusseldorf
The refurbishment of the lobby, bar and restaurant took place in 2003 and its transformation is remarkable. The new spaces are clean lined but comfortable. The use of simple light sources and projection carefully integrated into the fabric of the interior in collaboration with the interior designer is the reason for the success of the project.
Featured manufacturers: Encapsulite, Louis Poulsen, Hilco, Wila, Modular, Concord:marlin and Kemps Neon.

The Grand Hyatt Dubai
This project was completed about two years ago and is a landmark in Dubai. dpa were responsible for designing the lighting to the internal public areas and exterior of the building. The white clad sections of the building faced are illuminated with iGuzzini Colour Woody luminaires concealed at roof level on the podium roof and within the landscape. On most evenings, the building is illuminated with pure white light. For special events and functions a pre-programmed colour changing sequence can be initiated that slowly steps from one colour to the next, over a number of minutes. Static, single colours can also be selected manually via the lighting control system.
Featured manufacturers: Osram, iGuzzini, Louis Poulsen, Thorn, Oldham Lighting, Cube, Kemps Neon, MDS Services, Enliten, Dynalite and Neolec. |
